The Wollybear Festival was founded in 1973 by Dick Goddard Fox8 TV who conversed with some friends and co-workers about using the woollybear to predict the winter. Woollybear is a brown and orange caterpillar that people believe can foretell the upcoming winter. The festival takes place at the end of September or October of the fall season. It is held in Vermilion, Ohio on Lake Erie in the United States.
Approximately 100,000 people come to see three long hours parade with two dozen marching bands. It is a one day event that includes the crowning of the Woollybear King and Queen, woollybear races, 5 km race, costume contests for kids and pets and the winter weather forecast by Bill Sunny Skies summers.
