The Portugal Day Festival began in 1979 to celebrate Portuguese people, language and their culture. It marks the death of Portugal’s greatest poet, Luis de Camões’ on 10th June 1580 which is also observed as Portugal’s National Day. It is a colossal street festival that takes place on the official Portugal National Day on Saturday and Sunday usually adjacent to 10th June. It is celebrated in Newark, New Jersey in the United States.
It is celebrated in the major parts of the world where Portuguese folk are scattered. The festival is hosted by the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation and features music, games and carnival.
