Yellu Amavasya or Ellu Amavasi Festival is celebrated as a gratitude to Mother Earth for a bumper crop. It occurs in the month of December or January and is celebrated especially in North Karnataka and in Andhra Pradesh by the farmers.
For better harvest special prayers are held at rural temples. The farmers visit the fields and pray to Mother Earth. A special dish is prepared on this day and is offered to Mother Earth. All around the farms the jaggery and sesame are sprayed. It is believed that sesame and jaggery is a food for worms. The special vegetarian dishes like chikki, jowar kadabu, palak, bartha, sajje kadabu ,bajje, pundi, menthe and rajgiri are prepared.
