Why do we celebrate Navratri?

The Navratri Festival is a Hindu Festival celebrated in glory of Goddess Durga’s nine manifestations. The festival celebrates the Goddess Durga’s triumph over Mahishasura who was a demon and his head was like buffalo.

In a year Navratri is celebrated four times

1. Vasanta Navaratri is celebrated in the month of March or April.
2. Gupta Navaratri occurs in Ashadha month that is in June or July.
3. Sharana Navaratri falls in the month of September or October.
4. Poushya Navaratri takes place in December or January.
5. Magha Navaratri occurs in the month of January or February.

The nine days festival is celebrated all across India but the festival is more popular in West Bengal. The beginning three days of the festival are devoted to Goddess Durga. The following three days are devoted to Goddess Lakshmi and the concluding three days are devoted to Goddess Saraswati.

Some people fast on these days. The Kanya Puja is performed during the festival. The nine girls who depict the Goddess Durga’s nine forms are worshipped by washing their feet and offering them new clothes.
