Kharchi Puja or Chibrwi Mwtai festival is the celebration of the earth. It is believed that the Mother Earth turns unholy after Amba buchi or Ama Pechi. Therefore Kharchi Puja is performed to purify the earth.
It is celebrated in the month of July at Chaturdas Devata Temple at Old Agartala or Purana Haveli in Tripura.
The seven days event is celebrated by worshipping the idol of fourteen Tripuri Gods namely- Bachhua Bubagra, Thumnairok Burasa, Harung Bubagra, Kotor, Kotor-ma, Khuluma, Lampra, Mailuma, Nangkhtai Bubagra, Sangrongma, Subrai Raja, Twi Bubagra, and Banirok known as Kharchi Puja. But now it has altered and given the Hindu version names of Agni, Brahma, Durga, Earth, Ganesha, Ganga, Himavan, Kartikeya, Kama, Lakshmi, Shiva, Saraswathi, Vishnu and Varuna.
During this period these deities are taken out of the temple and are open to public. The word Kharchi is the corrupt form of Khya meaning earth. During the event people offer goats and pigeons sacrifice to the idols.
