Karva Chauth is a fast that is observed by married women for the prosperity, well being and long life of their husband.
It is celebrated nine days before Diwali festival usually in the month of October or November. It is a Hindu festival but is celebrated by some Sikh women. The festival is celebrated mostly in North India.
Some unmarried or engaged women also keep the fast. This is a difficult fast to observe as it starts before sunrise and ends after worshiping the moon. After sunrise no food or water is to be taken. On this day Moon is prayed. The fast is broken by the women only after seeing the moon. The husband feeds her first bite and then she takes dinner.
