Diwali is one of the most prominent and sacred festivals of the Hindus, Sikhs and Jainism. It is celebrated in memory of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile. On this day in 1619 the sixth Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was released from the imprisonment along with 52 other princes from the Gwalior Fort.
Every year Diwali falls on the new moon day of Kartick month. It may fall towards the end of October or the beginning of November and is celebrated all over India and abroad where Indian communities are residing.
It is well known as the festival of lights. The preparations are made almost month before the festival. People clean their houses, get their shops and houses white washed. On Diwali people exchange sweets and gifts with their kith and kins. On this day Goddess Lakshmi of wealth is worshiped. Children and people fire crackers at night.
